Kinship home studies are completed for families wanting to become licensed to care for their relatives who are in state custody due to allegations of abuse and neglect. Kinship Locators help identify, locate, and engage relatives that may become kinship caregivers for children removed from their homes.
KinshipSD programming is also available to help both formal and informal kinship caregivers provide care to minor children who are unable to live with their birth parents for any reason. Families providing kinship care may need support, information and referrals, or other assistance to ensure children in your care have a safe, stable, and nurturing home while you also work to meet their own needs. The Kinship Navigator program is here to help.
The Kinship Navigator Specialist may be able to assist in the following ways:
- One-on-one support
- Assistance with finding financial supports
- Learning or refreshing parenting skills
- Help understanding child development, trauma, and other needs
- Navigating education systems
- Understanding legal options
- Help navigating the available resources for you and the children
- Connections with other kinship caregivers
