Most programs require referrals through state agencies like Child Welfare Services and the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Division of The Department of Health.
Here is a brief description of foster care related services:
Hale Malama – Specialized foster care for children with medical needs, ages 0 to 5. Accepts referrals through DHS Child Welfare Services. Recruitment for new foster families is ongoing if those inquiring would like to become a foster parent. This program is located on Oahu.
Permanency Support Services – Oversees and supports the placement of children across state lines. Accepts referrals through DHS Child Welfare Services and this is a statewide program.
Na Ohana Pulama – Therapeutic foster care for youth with emotional and behavioral issues. Accepts referrals through the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Division. Recruitment for new foster families is ongoing if those inquiring would like to become a foster parent. This program is located on Oahu and Hawaii Island but accepts referrals statewide.
Statewide Resource Families – Completes assessments, training, ongoing support groups and assists with licensing of foster homes for Child Welfare Services. Recruitment of general license families in ongoing and anyone interested can visit DHS’ website for foster families at rcg.hawaii.gov. Our program provides a hotline to support current foster families in Hawaii and the number for that is (808) 545-1130 or toll free at 1-866-545-0882. This is a statewide program.
