KINECT (Kinship Education, Counseling, and Training) at Family and Children’s Service of Ithaca provides counseling, case management, and advocacy for kinship caregivers and their families.  Services are provided to families in any legal arrangement, and can be provided in home and office settings.  Services are provided to families free of charge.

Since 1996, the Rural Law Center of New York (RLCNY) has been providing free civil legal services to low-income individuals and families statewide. The Rural Law Center’s legal staff is available to assist kinship caregivers from most upstate New York counties. Family members are welcome to contact our offices with any questions you may have regarding custody, visitation and other Family Court matters.  Our staff will provide legal advice and can assist you with the preparation of custody petitions and other common issues. Our services are made possible primarily with financial support from NYS Judiciary Civil Legal Services and the IOLA Fund of the State of New York.  The RLCNY serves every upstate county in New York except: Erie, Niagara, Monroe, Onondaga, Oneida, Broome, Albany, Dutchess, Orange, Rockland, and Westchester. We do not serve NYC or Long Island.

Provides assessment, counseling, treatment, and crisis services to adults, children and families with mental health impairments, on a sliding scale basis. Provides court-ordered evaluations for family courts in Tompkins and adjacent counties, and evaluates and provides or monitors mental health services for jail inmates.

EMERGENCY AND CRISIS — FOR 24-HOUR HELP Call the Crisis Phone Line, Suicide Prevention and Crisis Service – (607) 272-1616. 24-hour crisis intervention telephone service provides counseling for people of all ages who are considering suicide or struggling with such issues as depression, loss, grief, family problems, health/mental health problems or addiction.

The Family Court hears and determines most legal issues involving children and families. There is a Family Court within each County of the State which is authorized to hear matters relating to: custody, visitation and guardianship, monetary support for children, spouses and ex-spouses, paternity, abuse and neglect of children, violence among family members, children accused of committing crimes (JD), and children in need of supervision (PINS).

This support group meets the 4th Monday of every month from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Open to grandparents and any others who have assumed the parenting role for a relative. Free childcare available during the meeting. Please call ahead before coming.
